Hojicha is a traditional Japanese tea made from roasted green tea leaves. It has an incredibly smooth and naturally sweet taste with delicious nutty, roasted flavours. It's low in caffeine, which makes it great for an evening latte.
What's the best way to drink hojicha?Hojicha can be enjoyed on its own, but is also delicious as a latte or in desserts. As with any other green tea, hojicha is prepared using hot, not boiling water. Whether you're steeping the whole leaves as a tea or whisking up the powder to make a latte, the ideal water temperature is 80C (175 F).
For Hojicha loose leaf tea, simply steep one teaspoon of Hojicha in one cup of hot water for 2-3 minutes.
To prepare Hojicha powder, whisk one teaspoon of Hojicha powder with about 2oz of hot water. You can use a bamboo whisk or an electric frother. Enjoy it with water, or add some frothed milk and a little bit of sweetener to make a latte.
Hojicha Latte
Whisk Hojicha with hot water and sweetener. For an iced latte, fill a tall glass with ice and pour over milk and hojicha. For a hot latte, top Hojicha with steamed milk.
